We are ready to take the trip Thursday!!!!
We are ready for the showcase.
We are ready for LATI to be over!!!!

Although, I know the powers that be will give us something more to take on. Please give us time to take a breath.
It has been a good educational experience. Glad I did it.

LATI 6/9/08

I just submitted brochure for project. I sent to Laura by mistake, then sent to webmaster@carr.org
I have display board done, even though Patty did not want me to use her picture. She takes a great picture. I don't like pictures of myself either, they seem to mock me or mock what I used to be-"vanity, thy name is woman". NO, I am not citing my source (A little LATI rebellion).

We had our first program. It was fun. Not too many came, but maybe we need to spread the word more.

LATI Showcase-brochure 5/27/08

Patty, Ginny and I have been fine tuning our thoughts on the GROWTH model and the brochure and the showcase display.
On Wednesday 5/28/08 at 2pm we are having our first Wii program for senior citizens
( maybe some illegal, non citizens also). Maybe I can get some pictures and comments to use with our display. It should be fun.

I missed it -YA book and Juvenile book

I missed this and I want to blog about these 2 books.

I am a big Isabel Allende fan and I found she also writes for teens.
"City of Beasts" was a fun read but not enough fun for me to read the 2 others published later that make it a 3 book deal. I like fantasy also , but something did not click for me.

"A Dog's Life" by Ann M. Martin has become one of my favorite books. I will suggest it whenever I can.
A stray dog finds a home with an older ,single woman and the story is told from the dog's point of view. I loved it!

Reader's Advisory-If I had attended

I did read different and interesting books to discuss at Reader's Advisory. We at ACLS had already taken a reader's advisory class ,so we did not have to attend. After the day we had traveling on 4/23/08, we could'nt handle another day of being lost for 3 hours.

Resistance, a novel/ Owen Sheers Good read on obscure history during WWll in Great Britain. First novel by Owen Sheers. Hope there is another.

The World is Flat, a brief history of the twenty-first century/ Thomas L. Friedman
I listened to this in my car back and forth to work. I am now enlightened to one man's view of the way our world works.

Freakonomics, a rogue economist explores the hidden side of everything/ Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner.
I listened to this one also in the car.
Both authors like to turn conventional wisdom open for thought. They explored the hidden side to "everything". Entertaining and thought provoking read.

5/15/08 It's Thursday!

John Gall's video was very interesting. His company publishes 200 books per year and they are all the same size.
To design a cover, there are some rules.
1. Read the book.
2. Inspirartion is everywhere.
3. Be thrifty with fonts.
4. Practice sound time management.
5. RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN.

Final product is a book. Quote from John Gall, " Books are wonderful things".

My favorite cover is the first printing of "The World is Flat". The title of the painting of sailing ships going over the edge of the world is "I told you so".

5/15/08 submitted form for showcase

LATI is winding up or down ,however I want to put it. I think I have most assignments done. I am going back over my work to make sure-but, I have learned!
I submitted form for showcase to Laura today.

SLRC tour LATI -May 1st ,2008

I had a really nice, educational day. I did not drive, therefore, I did not get lost. No GPS this time either. ACLS has to keep up appearances.
Pratt library is a beautiful building and Honore was outside waiting for us-a nice familiar face to greet us as she told us she would be.
I took the all day tour. Lunch was great and we had fun.
I was on a SLRC tour about 10 years ago, so it was time again. I like seeing the "behind the scenes" places in Pratt. It is good to put places and faces in my mind to sort out people who are able to help me help patrons find materials and information that they are seeking.

I went on a Library of Congress tour on May 3rd-I never tire of libraries.

Lati face to face 3 hours late 4/23/08 Our faces were red!

We went wrong in Hancock!
The van had 1/2 tank of gas, so we stopped in Hancock thinking we had plenty of time. It was 6:30. When we left Hancock with a full tank and fresh coffee to drink we were talking but the GPS interrupted us. Stupidly, we listened, and before we knew what happened ( yes you might call us blonde, but old blonde) we were driving the scenic route to Odenton.
It was beautiful. Trees and flowers were all in bloom. The sun was shining. We watched young Mennonite children get on the bus for school. We rolled over the hills looking at large wonderful homes, old and new, with cows and sheep in the fields. We were enjoying this "back way". We went through a covered bridge, a one lane tunnel, and a Maryland State park. We saw no gas stations or stores-no one to ask. And the GPS was giving us directions! We did not see an interstate road anywhere. We were happy. Did I mention that all cell phone calls for advice would drop?
We were concerned when time came close to our 9:30 meeting. Nonetheless we were told by the GPS that we were 39 miles from Odenton. Wonderful! We will be a little late, but OK , we will get there. Ginny called Honore and said we would be late. Honore said not to worry. But when Patty pointed out a pretty house I said "Yes it is another ******* pretty house.
Unfortunately we (I) missed the turn to Odenton. But we had GPS, so no worries?
We knew we went wrong AGAIN when we passed Ft. Mead, BWI, and the entrance to the tunnel. Thank goodness for "U" turns. I hope there were no cameras. Then we started hoping a police car would stop us and we could tell the officer how stupid we felt, and maybe get help. No luck.
Ginny then said there is the outline of Baltimore off in the distance and we said "No, couldn't Be" HA. What did we do but continue to midtown Baltimore. No one said we had learned our lesson yet. We saw the Constellation, Camden Yard Field, Bromo Seltzer Tower (Twice ,from different angles).
Then Ginny called Honore again from a gas station near Eutah Street. The people we came across at gas stations didn't understand English and we didn't understand their language.
Honore was so gracious and she told us we were 1/2 hour from Odenton. If we could find 295. Then we started thinking maybe she meant for us to get to "95". We decided to go for any blue sign to get us out of town. We took 95 and we went right to Odenton.
We were 3 hours late, but, better late than never. We have all heard that one before.
Honore said "Here are the ladies from Allegany County". What have we done for our reputation?
We were just in time for a break and LUNCH, you know we somehow missed breakfast.
People were so nice to us and filled us in on what we missed in the morning. The afternoon was filled with books and interactive activities and games. Lots of helpful info on intergenerational programming.
One librarian was nice enough to tell us she had a new GPS and got lost coming to the meeting, but she came a day early. She had the dates mixed up, so she had a dry run or rehearsal. That was kind of her to share when we felt so stupid.
After the meeting, with precise directions from many people we left Odenton for home. We drove home with NO problems because we turned off the GPS. Do ya think we need a tutorial on GPS?
Although we are doing just fine with LATI, our directional skills are lacking.
Patty ,Ginny, and I have been informed that Maryland AND Lisa are going with us on the SLRC tour on May 1st. But we know our way to Baltimore-I guess we have to EARN the right to go by ourselves, and I don't blame them. We welcome the company. See you May 1st!!

A Whole New Mind/Pink 4/21/08

I read Chapters 1-3 and I will read the rest soon. This subject matter about gray matter does interest me. Part One-The concetual Age.
Chapter one-Right brain rising. Provides an overview of the key differences between our left and right hemispheres and explains why. Makes no difference, right brain or left brain, one is not better than the other. Right hemisphere interprets emotional content, intuitive answers, perceiving things holistically. A side dish to the main course of true intelligence. What distinguishes us from other animals is our ability to reason analytically. Right side takes in everything, left side takes in order, sequentially. Right side is the picture and the left side is the thousand words.Right side isspecializes in text, right side specializes in context. Left-analizes details, right side synthesizes big picture.
1. What is whole point of first chapter? To make us realize we need both sides working together to use intelligence.

Chapter two-Abundance, Asia, and Automation.
Author makes point to appeal to the most left-brained amoung us. Three social and economic forces-Abundance, Asia, and Automation- are nudging us into the conceptual age. MBA versus MFA. MFA is the new MBA.
Three forces have tilted scales in favor of R-Directed Thinking. Abundance has satisfied the material needs of millions-boosting the significance of beauty and emotion and accelerating individual's search for meaning. Asia is now performing large amounts of routine, white collar, L-Directed work at significantly lower costs, thereby forcing workers in the advanced world to master abilities that can't be shipped overseas. And automation has begun to affect this generation's white collarworkers in much the same way it did last generation's blue collar workers, requiring L-Directed professionals to develope aptitudes that computers can't do better, faster, or cheaper.
2. How can the worker develope skills to compete with the changes that are always evolving? Be ready to learn whatever new way of thinking is developing.

Chapter three-High concept, High touch.
We,as a people, have moved from Agricultural Age, to Industrial Age, To the Information Age (We are now in Info Age) and we are moving into the Conceptual Age. We have moved to economy based on people's backs to an economy built on people's L-Brain to what is emerging today: an economy built on people's R-Brain. We still need L-Brain but in combination with R-Brain. Conceptual-we need a whole new mind. High tech is not enough. Supplement our well-developed high tech abilities with abilities that are high concept and high touch.
Create artistic and emotional beauty, to direct patterns and opportunities, to craft.A satisfying narrative and to combine seemingly unrelated ideas into a novel invention. High touch involves the ability to empathize, to understand the subtleties of human intraction, to find joy in one's self and elicit it in others, and to stretch beyond in pursuit of purpose and meaning.
3. Does the SAT way of testing need to be updated? Yes, to capture the new way of thinking-there needs to be a new way to test for skills.

LATI 4/15/08

I just printed out feedback responses for Business, Subject resources, Search tools, and Reader's advisory. At this point I am enjoying this too much-BUT don't ask me if I need "Additional information/practice".

LATI 4/9/08

I seemed to be just coasting along and today when I tried to log in-I could not. Actually it was a relief. I needed a break.
I was going to finish up my Googling tutorial and questions--I will do it later.

LATI March 28, 2008

I spent 4 hours Friday adding to my modules-lost some input-had to put in again. I was lucky, there was a sub working who took the desk. I took advantage of the help and got a lot done. Yes, Ruby did have frequent breaks. She needed them, but so did I. Somewhere, sometime, someone said LATI would only take an hour or so each day. I must be slow!!!

LATI 3/20/08 Puppy Talk

I tried to set up a typekey or typepad account-could not. So I will post to my blog instead.
We have all thought our transaction was over only to find that we skipped something in the interview.
Sometmes I feel like the"Spanish Inquisition" from Monty Python with patrons. But maybe that is what is needed to be able to pull out of a patron what they cannot express until further prompting reveals what they are really looking for.

Key question would have been-What is it you want to know about Chesapeake Bay Retreivers?
We have all been guilty of assuming that a patron actually wants what they are asking for. We have to learn how to pry their question out of them in a friendly way.

LATI March 17th

Yes, I am Irish! Happy Day!

I just posted a couple items on modules. Duh! You should post more than once under some subjects or modules. I get it now, about time.

LATI 03/12/08 project/coaching

Patty, Ginny and I met with our supervisor today and discussed our project for LATI showcase. In an effort to promote the Senior segment of our community we will establish and monitor a monthly meeting called "Wii Wednesdays".
This will be the first program in our library system focused entirely on senior citizens.
We plan to conduct monthly one hour programs interactive with senior citizens using the Wii gaming system.
The last Wednesday of each month will be set aside for this activity. Dates: May 28th, June 25th, July 30th, Aug. 27th all @2pm. Our goal is to encourage Seniors of our community to make use of the library and maybe discover other things the library has to offer them.

Reference work 3/06/02

Looking in the reference books and deciding the scope, organization, purpose of each book and then critique in my non-professional way is a bit taxing today. Then come up with a question and answer it and site the source and then enter this info into module is work intensive. I understand the reason for it all-but, it is Friday. Yes I am learning. Dammit.

LATI after Face to face.on Feb 21, 2008

I feel much better and will keep working on LATI. I just was reminded that I completed LATI in the 80's by a co-worker who worked on it with me. I even have a certificate for it. I am sure it is not applicable now. There was no computer work on it.
I will continue to learn the newer ways to access information because it helps me serve patrons.

LATI feb 14

I read through the email from LATI. There is no way I could do it all in one day or even week.
I visited LATI blog and posted my angst.
I think I spread my angst other places too.
I viewed the LATI Intranet Tutorial.
I found Week One PDF. Printed the itinerary and Journey Definitions.
The Blue bracelet-I guess it goes with my ONE bracelet.
I changed from password newbie to ******HA ,gotcha!
I read Welcome message and responded in discussion board.
I watched and listened to Assignment Tutorial.
I have connected virtually and discussed it by visiting the general discussion board.
http://2dogowner.blogspot.com/ is my blog address and I sent that to Laura@wowva.com/
AND SHE ANSWERED ME.
Honore and Laura said it will become clearer-I can only hope.
